On February 20, 2011, Trevor Bayne stormed onto the front page of the sports world, becoming the youngest winner in the history of the famed Daytona 500, and in the process pulled off one of the biggest upsets in sports history. Just one day after his 20th birthday, Bayne took the checkered flag in the “Super Bowl” of motorsports and vaunted himself into the national spotlight and to the forefront of the NASCAR scene. The victory came in only his second career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) start.
He followed up the historic victory with his first career NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) win at Texas Motor Speedway in the fall. For the season Bayne tallied 14 top-10 and five top-five finishes in 29 NXS starts in 2011.
Bayne joined Roush Fenway Racing in October 2010. He competed in the balance of NXS races (seven) in 2010 in a Roush Fenway Ford and continued to compete in the NXS until the completion of the 2014 season. Then, in May of 2014, it was announced that Bayne would make the move to the NSCS with Roush Fenway full-time in 2015, piloting the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford Fusion.
Bayne, who hails from Knoxville, Tenn., started the first 28 races of 2010 for Michael Waltrip Racing. He drove to three poles, five top-five and nine top-10 finishes in 14 starts, before making the move to Roush Fenway. He closed out the season with top-15 finishes in five of his seven races, including a fifth-place run in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
He began his racing career at the age of five. In the eight years that he competed on the go-kart circuit, Bayne earned three World Championships with over 300 feature wins and 18 State and Track Championships combined.
At the age of 13, he made the move to the Allison Legacy Race Series, where he became the youngest top rookie in the series. Over his two year stint in the series, Bayne notched 14 wins, 19 pole positions and 30 top-five finishes in only 41 starts, en route to becoming the series’ National Champion in 2005.
Bayne then made a successful transition to the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series Southern Division, where at the age of 15, he again became the youngest driver to ever earn the series’ top rookie honors.
Bayne’s climb toward a career in NASCAR got a boost when Dale Earnhardt Inc. signed him to its driver development program in 2008. That year he began competing in the NASCAR Camping World East Series, where he grabbed his first NASCAR series win at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway on July 21. He went on to earn six top-five and seven top-10 finishes and finished fourth in the NASCAR Camping World East point standings.
In 2009, Bayne started off the year by finishing second in the Toyota All-Star Showdown on January 24 at Irwindale Speedway. Due to his performance at the Showdown, the young Bayne captured the Sunoco Rookie of the Race honors and attracted the attention of many.
Bayne made his NXS debut March 21st at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, where he finished 23rd driving Jimmy Mean’s No. 52 entry. He was tabbed to run a part-time schedule for Michael Waltrip Racing in the No. 99 in 2009.
He started his stint behind the No. 99 in impressive fashion, grabbing the outside pole at Nashville Superspeedway on June 6. In 15 races in 2009, Bayne earned one pole and two top-10s, while finishing inside the top 15 seven times.
He made his NSCS debut in November of 2010 in Texas behind the wheel of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion for the famed Wood Brothers, finishing 17th.
In his spare time, Bayne enjoys biking, wakeboarding and snowboarding. He is an avid hiker who enjoys countless other outdoor activities. Bayne also spends a lot of time raising awareness for Back2Back Ministries’ orphanages in Monterrey, Mexico.
