Sonoma, Cal. (June 23, 2013) – Greg Biffle showed off his road course skills in wine country Sunday afternoon. From his fourth-place qualifying effort, Biffle went on to earn an eighth-place finish and jumped up to sixth in the point standings. The field was on different pit strategies and the cars with fresher tires gained some spots in the closing laps on the No. 16 team.
“It was a great day,” said Biffle after the race. “We could have been a little bit better, but I’m happy with a top 10. Our pit strategy didn’t go our way, but it was close. We wanted to stay on the track all day because we knew that would lead to a good finish and that’s what we did. We’re pretty happy with it.”
The Sonoma region rarely sees rain this time of year, but some sprinkles came down right before the race. The shower wasn’t enough to affect the track surface and the field took the green flag. Biffle started fourth but moved up to third on the first lap. The first caution came out just six laps into the race and the team opted to stay out. On the restart, Biffle got shuffled back and dropped to sixth-place.
The second caution came out on lap 25 for rain and Biffle was back to eighth and losing rear grip. Biffle pitted for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. The goal was to make the race in two pit stops but an earlier than expected caution caused a shift in pit strategy, and crew chief Matt Puccia called Biffle down pit road under yellow on lap 69 for fuel only.
Biffle restarted 16th but as other pit strategies played out the No. 16 team found themselves inside the top 10. By the drop of the checkered flag, Biffle had driven his No. 16 3M Ford to an eighth-place finish.
Martin Truex Jr. earned his first victory since 2007, while Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top five. Next up tune into TNT Saturday, June 29th at 7:30pm ET for Saturday night racing from Kentucky Speedway.
