Kansas City, Kan. (October 7, 2013) – The Hollywood Casino 400 had a record setting 15 cautions and a Goodyear tire compound that threw a curve ball to the entire 43-car field. Even with an extra day of testing, Biffle and his team struggled to find speed and handling in the Sherwin Williams Ford. With a 26th-place qualifying effort the team focused on 267-laps of racing. Multiple adjustments were made to help with more front turn, but when the checkered flag waved Biffle was 13th. The finish keeps the No. 16 sixth in the Championship point standings.
“We weren’t very good all weekend,” said Biffle. “I am really happy with a 13th-place finish to be honest with you. We fought hard to get that. I drove hard and we had about a 30th place car and finished 13th with it so I am pretty happy with that.”
The race started off with a long green flag run, after a caution on the opening lap. Prior to the first pit stop Biffle brushed the outside wall with his Sherwin Williams Ford, but luckily the damage was minimal. The team’s first pit stop came on lap 45 under caution for four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment.
It seemed as if different adjustments of track bar, wedge, shim and air pressure all made slight dents into the teams handling woes, but nothing seemed to quite get the Sherwin Williams Ford heading to the front. As pit strategy played out Biffle found himself briefly inside the top 10.
As the race wound down Biffle needed more front turn, but did his best with what he had. Biffle’s perseverance paid off in a 13th-place finish.
Kevin Harvick won the Hollywood Casino 400, while Kurt Busch charged from the rear in a backup car from an accident in practice to finish second. Jeff Gordon, Joey Logano and Carl Edwards rounded out the top five. The halfway mark of the 2013 Chase will be Saturday night under the lights from Charlotte Motor Speedway.
