Edwards Battles Hard For 8th-Place Finish on the Magic Mile

Loudon, NH. (July 16, 2013) – Everyone was predicting a short green flag race on Sunday at “The Magic Mile” in New Hampshire, but the race was quite the contrary.   The Camping World RV Sales 301 surprised the teams and fans with 12 cautions and a dark horse winner, Brian Vickers.  Carl Edwards and the No. 99 Fastenal Ford qualified 7th, but lined up 6th when NASCAR sent the 48 car to the rear.  Edwards and the Fastenal crew fought hard all day to get a top-10 finish.  They battled the first 135 laps to stay in or close to the top-10, but fell back to 18th during the middle of the race.  The final laps were electrifying with the final caution on lap 297 setting up a Green-White-Checkered finish.  Edwards survived to the end and was able to pull off a hard fought 8th place finish.

The 301 lap race started out with the 43 car field being very impatient with two of the yellow flags flying in the first 13 laps.  Edwards reported that his Ford was a little tight and Jimmy Fennig advised him they would add some wedge to help him on the next stop.  The Fastenal team jumped into action on a green flag stop on lap 76 and changed 4 tires, made a wedge adjustment and filled it full of fuel.  He entered in 10th and retained 10th when pit stops had cycled through.

Edwards hovered around the top-10 until lap 135, but started sliding back during the middle of the race and struggled over the next 126 laps to stay in the top-15. On lap 261 Edwards had fought his way back to P-11 and was on the brink of reestablishing his position back in the top-10.  He eventually battled his way back through the field and put the No. 99 car in position to obtain the best finish he could for the Fastenal team.

The 12th and final caution flag flew on lap 297 setting up an exciting green-white-checker finish.  On the restart Edwards scratched his way to a very solid 8th place finish while Brian Vickers captured his first win of the 2013 season.  Edwards maintained the third position in the points standings.

“That was a hell of a battle,” stated Edwards. “I am pretty proud of how everybody fought really hard the whole time and we ended up with a top-10. The car was not as good as we finished and we made some things happen on the restarts which we haven’t been able to do for a while, so that was really nice. I had a good time out there and we were able to get a good finish out of a crazy day, so that is good.”

The No. 99 Fastenal team and NASCAR Sprint Cup will have this weekend off and return to the track Sunday, July 28th at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Brickyard 400 at 1:00 p.m. EST on ESPN.
