Edwards Leads Roush Fenway to Victory in Phoenix

Avondale, Ariz. (March 3, 2013) – Roush Fenway’s Carl Edwards pulled away on a green-white-checkered finish and never looked back; earning a huge victory in the Subway Fresh Fresh Fit 500 Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway. The win is Roush Fenway’s seventh at PIR in the Sprint Cup Series and the team’s record-extending 312th NASCAR victory. Greg Biffle led 39 laps in the race; finishing 17th. RFR rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was 16th in the final rundown.

“I don’t even know where to start,” said Edwards who broke a 70-race winless streak with the victory. “I have a lot of people to thank; first and foremost Jack Roush and of these guys at Roush Fenway.”

With a solid lead late in the race, Edwards, who led 122 laps in the event, looked to have the victory in hand before a late caution set up a wild green-white-checkered finish. However the field appeared to have little for the No. 99 Subway Ford as Edwards pulled out once again and never looked back.

“(Crew chief) Jimmy Fennig is the man,” added Edwards. “This pit crew is unreal; they won this race for us. This is huge. It’s a Subway race – we won it and we are back.

“I’m telling you we are back,” said Edwards. “This is going to be good. Whatever it is you are doing out there, don’t lose hope. You just keep digging and things can work out. This is awesome – one of the coolest wins of my life.”

With the win Roush Fenway scored the first win for Ford in the new Gen 6 Fusion.

On the day, RFR Fords combined to lead 161 (over half) of the race’s 316 laps. It is Roush Fenway’s 17th NASCAR victory at Phoenix.
