Richmond, V.A. (September 9, 2013) – Yesterday’s Federated Auto Parts 400 was a nervous night for many, as the field for the Chase was determined in a nail biting ending. Carl Edwards claimed sweet victory in his No. 99 Frosted Flakes Ford and heads into the Chase with two wins under his belt.
“That’s my pit crew that won this race for us,” said Edwards. “It was just an awesome job by them. It’s so cool to put Kellogg’s in Victory Lane. I’m sure I haven’t won a race here in the Cup car, so it’s a big night for us.”
Edwards started the 400-mile night race in 26th place but quickly revealed the steady strength of the No. 99 Frosted Flakes Ford. Edwards and crew chief Jimmy Fennig had the No. 99 team making consistent wedge and air pressure adjustments throughout the six pit stops of the night. Handling issues were kept to a minimum and Edwards was creeping into the top ten by lap 188. With just 76 laps remaining, the No. 99 Frosted Flakes Ford was in the top five.
Edwards was in second place at lap 346 and battled to the top just before Ryan Newman raced him back one spot. A timely caution came out and the No. 99 team got Edwards off of pit road in the lead, propelling him back to the forerunner of the pack and letting him claim his second victory of the season at the checkered flag.
“It was up at the beginning with Jimmy and our new team, and then we struggled for a little while, but the last three weeks have been great,” Edwards continued. “We’ve led a bunch of laps and have had fast race cars and we’re having fun. We’re going to win the championship. That’s our mission. The next 10 weeks, we’re going to be on them hard. They’re going to know we’re here.”
