Concord, N.C. (May 27, 2013) –After the grueling challenge of the season’s longest race of the year, Edwards and the No. 99 Fastenal Blue Team rose to the 600-mile challenge, scoring an eleventh-place finish at the end of the night and maintaining Edwards’ second-place position in the series points’ standings.
Edwards started the night in 13th place, and although there were no cautions within the first 120 laps, Edwards took the No. 99 Fastenal Ford up to ninth place as the first yellow went out. The No. 99 Blue Team consistently gave Edwards fresh tires through all but one pit stop of the night and the team worked on chassis adjustments until the last 100 laps.
“We struggled all night and I think we were doing everything we could to get the most spots we could,” said Edwards. “ I think if we would have played the game a little bit differently there with two tires, four tires, pit stops, not stopping and all that we could have maybe finished sixth or seventh, but that was about the best we were going to have. We’re missing something here. We started out a week ago with the pole and we thought everything was going to be great, but there’s something about the way this track drives in race trim that we just missed this time around. We’ll hopefully get it fixed for the fall.”
As the final green-flag stops begun, Edwards stayed out and slowly climbed his way to the leader of the pack. A final green-flag stop at lap 380 gave Edwards right-side tires, but an untimely caution went out just five laps after Edwards came to pit. The team came in for a set of fresh tires with only 15 laps remaining and Edwards was able to land an eleventh-place finish at the checkered flag.
“Yeah, it just didn’t work out at the end. We were trying to make something happen, trying to do better than that, and it got us. But like Jimmy said, we shouldn’t be in that position. We need to be faster so we can get up there doing what the leaders are doing.”
Edward will return to the track next weekend for the FedEx 400 presented by Autism Speaks at Dover International Speedway on Sunday, June 2nd at 2 p.m. EST on FOX.
