HAMPTON, Ga. (March 6, 2009) – Matt Kenseth covered the 1.54-mile tri-oval of Atlanta Motor Speedway in 30.16 seconds (183.795 mph) in his No. 17 DEWALT Ford Fusion to qualify 30th for Sunday’s 500-mile event.
“I thought it was going to be a better lap,” said Kenseth after the time trial session. “The car really gets into turns one and two really well, but then it pushed up the track in turn three and we probably lost three-tenths of a second right there.
“Going in it felt like we were going to nail a good lap, but the car just doesn’t get into three and four right. We’ll continue to work with it tomorrow and see if we can’t get that fixed for the race on Sunday.”
Kenseth was 21st in the earlier practice session with a fast time of 30.630 seconds (181.058 mph).
Former Roush Fenway teammate Mark Martin won the pole for the event with a time of 29.64 (187.045 mph).
The teams will have two more practice sessions on Saturday to work with the car (11-11:45 a.m. EST and 12:20-1:20 p.m.). Sunday’s race is set for 2:15 p.m. EST with prerace coverage set for 1:30 p.m. on FOX.
