Richmond, VA (September 7, 2012) – With one final race remaining before the 2012 Chase for the Sprint Cup field is set, NASCAR’s top series traveled to Richmond, Virginia for Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Matt Kenseth and his No. 17 Best Buy team are already locked into the Chase and came to Richmond looking for one more win. Kenseth earned the 17th starting position for Saturday night.
Sprint Cup series teams had two practices Friday afternoon. Kenseth finished 16th and 14th in those sessions and battled a race car that was loose in and off, as well as tight in the middle for much of those two practice sessions.
Qualifying for the Sprint Cup teams began at 5:35pm EST and Kenseth was the 30th car to take to the track for his two laps. The Best Buy Ford posted a fast lap of 21.433 seconds (125.974 mph) which finds him starting 17th for Saturday night.
“That was better than I expected it to be actually,” commented Kenseth after his qualifying effort. “It will probably only be 15th or 20th once it’s all over with, but hopefully closer to 15th. I kind of missed the gaps a little there and dragged the splitter so I just couldn’t really get it to turn during these laps.”
The Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway will be televised on Saturday, September 8th at 7:00p.m. EST on ABC with radio coverage presented by the Motor Racing Network (MRN).
