Sparta, Ky. (July 1st, 2013) – Weather delays on Saturday in Kentucky quickly shifted the Quaker State 400 from a night race to a day race when the green flag finally waved at noon. Edwards and the No. 99 UPS Ford lined up on the outside pole and quickly overtook the lead leading a total of 35 laps. However, in a long fought battle as the last 30 laps neared, Edwards found himself shuffled to the back of the pack and was forced to settle for a 21st place finish.
“Man, I don’t understand what happened there,” said Edwards. “We just got back in traffic and we were terrible at the end. I thought we were really good out front when we had track position. We were really good when we were out front. There at the end I just couldn’t make anything happen.” It was definitely a frustrating situation there.”
As Edwards jumped to the front, he expressed that the car was a little tight into turns one and two and on lap 31 resulting in wedge and track bar adjustments. Shortly thereafter, Edwards steadily ran in the top-five, but was adamant about how loose the car felt and the lack of rear grip began to concern him.
Edwards faced his first hurdle when only half the field had come for green-flag pit stops before a caution was thrown on lap 86. The No. 99 UPS Ford was 17th on the restart, but as the halfway point neared and the team was making their fourth stop of the day, Edwards won the battle off pit-road, leading the field to the green flag.
Handling issues still remained prevalent with Edwards and his crew dropping the No. 99 Ford outside the top 10 as the last 15 laps closed in. When the checkered flag waved, Edwards was left with a 21st -place finish despite strong successes earlier that day.
“It was definitely a frustrating situation there,” Edwards continued. “We are going to have to try to figure that out. That was really surprising. It was kind of a different experience there. We were feeling really good and having a good time out there for a little while but it turned out terribly. I guess that is the way it goes.”
The No. 99 team will return to the track this Saturday, July 6th at Daytona International Speedway for the Coke Zero 400 at 7:30 p.m. EST on TNT.
