Multi-Car Accident Spoils Stenhouse’s First Sprint Unlimited

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 15, 2014) – After jockeying in the top-five for much of the first 30 lap segment, Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s Nationwide Insurance Ford was collected in the nine car melee on lap 36 of the 75-lap Sprint Unlimited. The two-time Nationwide champion claimed a 15th-place finish in his first career Sprint Unlimited.

“I didn’t see anything from the time it started to the time it ended,” Stenhouse said. “I couldn’t see, couldn’t turn and just really destroyed our Nationwide Insurance Ford. I was up around the top and just tried to slow down as much as I could and then all of sudden I saw the underneath body of the 41. That is definitely not the way we wanted it to end but I thought we learned a lot through the first 35 laps but I definitely would have like to finish it.”

After the fans voted for the starting order to be based on final practice speeds, the 2013 Sprint Cup rookie of the year lined up in the third position for his first career Sprint Unlimited. After being shuffled back early on, Stenhouse solidly ran in the top-10 for a majority of the first 30-lap segment.

The caution was displayed on lap 29 after the No. 48 machine spun ending the first segment. Stenhouse brought his Nationwide Insurance Ford to pit-road for four fresh Goodyear tires and fuel.

The Olive Branch, Miss. native lined up 11th for the second 25-lap segment and was working his way to the front before being collected in a multi-car accident started when two cars made contact at the front of the pack. Stenhouse settled for a 15th-place finish.
