TALLADEGA, AL (April 25, 2009) – Carl Edwards and the Save-A-Lot Team went into Talladega Superspeedway with a very fast racecar. They started from the sixth position on the 2.66-mile track and immediately made their presence known by capturing the lead on lap 7 and collecting their five bonus points. They led three times for a total of 20 laps during the first half of the race.
Talladega lies in the heart of Dixie and is known for its high speeds, three and four-wide racing and the “Big One”. The NASCAR Nationwide Series only makes one appearance there during the 2009 season. The Superspeedway is a “Wild Card” race and normally presents an exciting finish for the fans. This race was no exception when Roush Fenway teammate Matt Kenseth got out of control and went sliding and flipping on the track and finally landed right side up with flames coming from his car. Edwards’ other teammate David Ragan came out of nowhere claiming his first Nationwide Series win.
Edwards and his No. 60 Save-A-Lot Ford looked liked the dominant car for the first half of the race drafting with Brian Vickers, but he drifted to the back in hopes of missing the “Big Wreck”. Unfortunately, the last caution on lap 114 foiled their strategy and they ran out of time and drafting partners to fight their way back to the front.
Edwards was able to move from 21st to 13th over the last 12 laps as the race ended in overtime with a green-white-checkered-flag finish. The race went three laps over the originally schedule 117 laps.
Next week Edwards travels to Richmond, VA. He won there last year and had a win in 2005 also. Edwards maintained second in the overall Nationwide Series Championship points standings, trailing by 62 points behind the leader Kyle Busch. The No. 60 team will be back representing Scotts Turf Builder in Richmond.
