Dover, Del. (June 3, 2013) – Greg Biffle came back from being two laps down to earn a 15th-place finish in his No. 16 ACE Brand / Rite Aid Ford Sunday at Dover. Dover, aka the “Monster Mile” proved to be a challenge for Biffle and his team. Biffle qualified 19th and took big swings at adjustments throughout the race. The team never gave up and the 15th-place finish maintained Biffle’s 13th-place points standing.
A heat wave came to town just in time for the NASCAR race weekend, making for a slick concrete surface at the one-mile track. Biffle and the team struggled in practice with handling, resulting in a 19th- place qualifying effort. Unfortunately the handling woes continued into the race.
On the first run Biffle reported back that he was loose into the turns and then tight up off of the corners. Four fresh tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment were given to him on the first pit stop, but it wasn’t a big enough swing at the teams handling issues.
Over the middle of the race Biffle lost two laps to the field as long green flag runs unfolded. The team took big swings at adjustments during their opportunities for adjustments. One stop the track bar was dropped six rounds, another a rubber in the left rear, all combined with fresh tires, fuel, track bar and air pressure adjustments.
Towards the end, Biffle was more content with his handling but never could get a caution to fall when he was in position for the “lucky dog.” On the final caution Biffle took the “wave-around” to be scored back on the lead lap. After conserving fuel until the end he was able to earn a 15th-place, lead lap finish.
Tony Stewart led just three laps at the end and took home his first win of the season. Juan Pablo Montoya, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and Brad Keslowski rounded out the top five. Next up the Sprint Cup Series heads to the 2.5-mile “Tricky Triangle” of Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa., race coverage begins at Sunday, June 9 at 1:00pm on TNT.
