Daytona Beach, FLA. (Feb. 17, 2013) – Roush Fenway rookie Sprint Cup driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. paced the team during Sunday’s Daytona 500 qualifying session, turning a lap of 46.027 seconds (195.537 mph) in his No. 17 Best Buy Ford; the 12th fastest time in the session.
“It wasn’t quite good enough but I felt like the Best Buy Ford Fusion drove the best that it has all weekend and that was the most speed we have had,” said Stenhouse, who enters full-time Sprint Cup competition this season coming off back-to-back Nationwide Series Championships.
“The guys took notes the whole off season after testing trying to make it as good as they could and I feel like that was pretty good speed out of it. We beat a few of the guys that were quite a bit faster than us yesterday. I feel like our guys did their job. It wasn’t quite good enough for the pole but we will take it and go on to the Duel and see how it drives in the draft.”
RFR teammate Carl Edwards turned the 17th fastest lap with a 46.097 (195.240 mph) and Greg Biffle was 27th (46.218/194.729 mph). Danica Patrick posted the day’s fastest time.
RFR’s Trevor Bayne, driving the Wood Brothers No. 21 Ford, was the fastest qualifying Ford, turning the third fastest lap, covering the 2.5-mile track in 45.924 seconds (195.976 mph).
The qualifying positions ultimately set the lineup for Thursday’s Budweiser Duel Races that will set the starting line for next Sunday’s 55th running of the famed Daytona 500.
Bayne, Edwards and Biffle are slated to compete in Duel No. 1, with Bayne starting on the front row. Stenhouse will start on the outside of row three in the second duel.
