DOVER, Del. (Sept. 29, 2013) – With two career Sprint Cup starts at the Monster Mile, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. battled with an ill-handling Ford Ecoboost Ford for a majority of Sunday’s AAA 400 to take the checkered flag in the 17th-position; earning the Sunoco rookie of the race award.
“We had high hopes coming in here after finishing 13th earlier this season,” Stenhouse said. “Definitely not the day we were looking for so we will go onto Kansas. I think as a team we all look forward to Kansas as we feel that we lost one there earlier in the season.”
After battling a loose machine during his qualifying laps on Friday, the rookie of the year contender started in the 15th position and maneuvered his Ford into the 14th position before the first yellow flag was displayed on lap 37 for debris.
With only four cautions in the 400-lap race, Stenhouse was unable to get back on the lead lap as only 12 cars finished on the lead lap. As the race progressed and many adjustments, Stenhouse still struggled with an ill-handling Ford Fusion but was able to work his way up to 17th, the first car two laps down, when the checkered flag waved.
Stenhouse and the No. 17 team travel to Kansas Speedway where the team led earlier in the season. The Hollywood Casino 400 will be on Oct. 6, 2013 with race coverage starting at 2 pm EST on ESPN.
