Stenhouse Overcomes Speeding Penalty to Finish 14th in the Duels at Daytona

Daytona Beach, Fla. (Feb. 21, 2013) - The Daytona 500 is NASCAR’s biggest race of the year, and the Duel races which set the Daytona 500 starting line-up are equally important. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. started the second Budweiser Duel in the sixth position. After a speeding penalty leaving pit-road, the Rookie of the Year contender battled his way back to a 14th-place finish.

“It was okay,” Stenhouse said. “I obviously made a mistake on pit road. I thought I hit the number right at the yellow line and obviously hit it a tick too early. That is the first time I have been caught speeding on pit road. We learned not to do that. As long as we don’t do that Sunday we will be okay. I think our No. 17 Best Buy Ford was fast enough to run up front, but the balance could be an issue later on in the race but all in all I think it will be good.”

The Olive Branch, Miss. native started the 60 lap shootout in the sixth position and was shuffled back to 11th- position after being caught on the inside lane without drafting help. Under a scheduled green flag pit-stop, Stenhouse was caught speeding while exiting pit-road resulting in a pass thru penalty dropping the rookie to 16th.

The two-time NASCAR Nationwide Champion battled back to gain two more positions in the closing laps to earn a 14th-place finish.Stenhouse and the No. 17 team will start the Daytona 500 in the 28th- position. The 500 is set for Sunday, February 24, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. EST, and will be televised live on FOX.  The race can also be heard on MRN and SIRIUS radio channel 90.
