AVONDALE, AZ (April 13, 2008) – Jamie McMurray and the No. 16 CitiFinancial team headed to Phoenix International Raceway this weekend looking for their second-straight top-five finish. McMurray looked poised to do just that when an incident with Clint Bowyer took the CitiFinancial Ford Fusion out of the race. McMurray finished 36th, the first time the No. 16 team has finished out of the top-15 all season.
The CitiFinancial Ford Fusion unloaded fast. During first practice, McMurray said the car was “really tight in the middle.” The team went to work and when the session ended, the CitiFinancial Ford Fusion was seventh on the charts. McMurray qualified ninth and the team felt they would have a top-five car come race time.
Early in the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200, McMurray said the CitiFinancial Ford Fusion was “just a little too tight.” McMurray was eighth when the caution flew on lap 32 and he came down pit road for the first time. Crew chief Eddie Pardue called for four tires and an air pressure adjustment. The CitiFinancial team knocked out a 13.91 second pit stop and gained McMurray three positions. He restarted fifth on lap 38.
The strong weekend would quickly end as contact with Bower on lap 39 ended McMurray’s night. The CitiFinancial Ford was damaged beyond repair and the team was forced to pack up and refocus on next weekend.
“I got into turn three and the 2 car picked me up and spun me around,” said McMurray. “We probably had a top-five car - the CitiFinancial Ford Fusion was really good all weekend. I hate it for all the guys on this team and everyone at CitiFinancial. After finishing fifth last week we all felt really good coming into tonight. We definitely should’ve been running up front at the end.”
