Diabetes Awareness Advocate Peter Kiernan to ‘Ride’ with Ryan Reed in Iowa

CONCORD, N.C. (June 15, 2016) – American Diabetes Association® representative and diabetes advocate Peter Kiernan will ‘ride’ along with Roush Fenway Racing driver Ryan Reed during Sunday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Iowa Speedway. The Des Moines, Iowa resident will have his name featured on a decal above the passenger-side window on the No. 16 Lilly Diabetes/American Diabetes Association Ford Mustang.

Like Reed, Kiernan lives with diabetes and knows the importance of staying healthy to manage his diabetes. He was diagnosed 11 years ago and has a long family history of diabetes. His favorite way to manage his health is through cycling.

“I really didn’t gain control of my diabetes until I started cycling several years ago,” said Kiernan. “Cycling allows me not only comradery with my friends while exercising, but the best control of my A1C since being diagnosed.”

Kiernan raises awareness and funds for the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure® cycling event. He was recently appointed to the Central Iowa American Diabetes Association board to oversee the Central Iowa area, which is comprised of 35 counties, with focus on the Des Moines metro.

“It’s cool to have someone with similar interests as me ride on the car this weekend,” said Reed. “Cycling is one of my favorite ways to manage my diabetes too and I’m glad Peter has found success in the sport. Having him ride along as a part of our Drive to Stop Diabetes is an honor and hopefully we can bring home a good finish for him.”

Ryan Reed and the ‘Riding with Ryan’ program roll into Iowa Speedway for the first time this season. In this race last year, Reed finished 12th after starting 16th.

The NASCAR XFINITY Series takes the green flag from Iowa Speedway on Sunday, June 19th at 1:30 p.m. ET on FS1 and MRN.
