Graves on Newman: “He’s very involved with the team”

CONCORD, N.C. (Feb 22, 2019) – Ryan Newman and Scott Graves made their 2019 Roush Fenway Racing debut last weekend at Daytona International Speedway. After getting caught in “The Big One” the duo ultimately took home a 14th-place result, finishing on a flat tire in the Daytona 500.

“We got everything we could fixed where we could get out on the track again,” Graves told SiriusXM’s Claire B. Lang. “We still had rub on the left front and it went flat. Obviously the way the race panned out with all the cautions, he was able to nurse it home.”

With Speedweeks behind the duo, Graves plans to take on Atlanta Motor Speedway with a positive attitude. His main goal is to do whatever it takes to maximize their time on track.

“What we’re working on is making sure that everything is in line here so that when we go through tech, we don’t lose practice time,” Graves explained. “It’s our first time at this track with this package, so we don’t want to do something that’s going to keep us from being on track.”

To date, Newman has seven pole awards, nine top-10’s and two top-five finishes at the Georgia track. He’s made sure to inform Graves of just how important that success is to him going into the race weekend.

“He definitely reminded me the other day of how successful he’s been at Atlanta and qualifying,” Graves said. “He said it was something to think about, no pressure or anything.”

The crew chief said Newman so far was easy to work with. He described him as demanding, but said that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“He expects a lot,” Graves said. “He’s very involved with the team and discussing through set-up things and ideas that we’re working on. I think it’s healthy to have his input with engineers, myself and the rest of the team on some of that stuff.”

Graves, Newman and the No. 6 Acorns Ford Mustang team return to the track this Sunday, February 24th at Atlanta Motor Speedway at 2 p.m. ET on Fox.
