Biffle Comes From the Back for Eighth-Place Finish in Atlanta; Moves up to Third in Point Standings

Hampton, Ga. (March 7, 2010) – Greg Biffle claimed his fourth top-10 finish a row this season today at Atlanta Motor Speedway in the Census 2010/3M Ford Fusion.  The Pit Bulls pulled their weight as usual by picking up a total of 16 positions on pit road over the course of the race.  More impressively, they did it all with the backup car starting from the rear of the field.  When Biffle got loose in Happy Hour on Saturday and flattened the right side of the No. 16 Ford, the team had the backup car ready to go in time for him to get six minutes of practice in it.  The team setup the car based on Biffle’s feedback about those six minutes on the track.  Biffle was in the top ten by lap 75 and remained there for the majority of the event.  He avoided a multi-car incident late in the race and went on to finish eighth.  The top-ten finish moves him up to third in the standings.

After starting in the rear of the field, Biffle began a steady climb to the front with the help of his pit crew.  He was 20th by the time he came in for his second pit stop under yellow on lap 36.  Despite reporting that the car was a little loose, he called for no changes and restarted 18th on lap 39.  When a caution came out for debris on lap 70, Biffle was 10th on the board and informed the team that the car was still a little too loose.

When Biffle brought the Census 2010/3M Ford to the pits, the crew gave him four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment.  This time the Pit Bulls picked up five positions in the pits and Biffle restarted fifth on lap 83.  Unfortunately the adjustments made the car a little too tight and Biffle lost six positions before a caution on lap 115 allowed him to pit for further adjustments.  The crew sent him back out in the eighth position for the restart on lap 119.

Biffle quickly made his way back into the top 10 despite reporting that the car was now tight on the bottom of the track and loose on the top.  He was able to remain in the top ten through another round of pit stops but fell back to 12th during a long green-flag run.  He pitted under green on lap 210 for tires, fuel and another track bar adjustment but was still on the outside of the top 10 looking in when a caution came out on lap 289.

This time Biffle took the opportunity to pit for four tires, fuel and track bar and wedge adjustments to try to correct the car’s handling.  The Pit Bulls picked up three positions and sent Biffle out 10th for the restart on lap 292.  He was running ninth when the Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski got together and brought out a long caution on lap 322.  Biffle made what would be his final stop of the day for four tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment.

The field restarted on lap 331 and on lap 332 a multi-car incident unfolded right in front of Biffle.  He was able to avoid the wreckage without a scratch and restarted eighth for the green/white/checker finish on lap 339.  When his line had a little trouble on the restart, Biffle dropped back to ninth but was able to get by Kevin Harvick on the final lap for an eighth-place finish.

“We had a really good day,” said Biffle.  “I don’t know what it is, but we keep getting screwed on these restarts.  Every time we’re at the end of the race – green-white-checkered or three to go – the guy in my lane spins his tires and we get all jacked up.  It happened on the restart before that and then it happened for the final restart.  I don’t understand.  We feel really good about the way we ran today but now is the time to get all you can get and when you have a chance to finish fifth and you finish eighth it still hurts.”

The third-place finish moves Biffle and the 3M team up to third in the point standings.  They are 59 points behind point leader Kevin Harvick and have a 110-point advantage on 13th place.  The team will enjoy their first off-weekend of the season next weekend before returning to the track on Sunday, March 21st at Bristol Motor Speedway.
