Roush Fenway Racing Ready to Take on Sonoma

CONCORD, N.C. (June 24, 2016) – The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NCSC) will head to California this weekend to take on Sonoma Raceway, the first road course race of the year. Roush Fenway Racing aims to win its third NSCS race at the track, and its 16th overall at road courses in NASCAR’s three national series.

“We’ve had a lot of success over the years at road courses,” said team co-owner Jack Roush. “They always provide unique challenges, and we are excited for the chance to pick up another road course victory.”

Mark Martin showed off his road racing prowess often in the 1990s. From 1993 to 1995, Martin won three straight races at Watkins Glen International. In the 1993 race, teammate Wally Dallenbach, Jr. joined Martin in victory lane, with Roush Fenway sweeping the top-two.

In 1997, Martin became the first Roush Fenway driver to celebrate in victory lane at Sonoma Raceway. He turned in a dominant performance, starting from the pole and leading all but five laps on the way to his fourth career win at a road course.

After a number of close calls over the years, Roush Fenway picked up another win in Sonoma in June 2014. In a highly competitive race, Carl Edwards took the lead on Lap 86 and never looked back, picking up his first NSCS road course win.

Roush Fenway has also found road course success in the NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS). Carl Edwards has three NXS road course victories; including the first-ever race at Road America. Chris Buescher won his first career NXS race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 2014, taking the lead on Lap 66, with enough fuel in the tank to take the checkered flag.

Among Roush Fenway’s six road course victories in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) is a win by Joe Ruttman at Sonoma Raceway. Ruttman leads Roush Fenway drivers with three NCWTS road course wins.

Greg Biffle has a number of close calls at Sonoma, including back-to-back top-five finishes in 2006 and 2007. In his last five races at the track, Biffle has finished in the top-10 three times.

Biffle has found victory lane twice in road races, winning at Watkins Glen International and Portland International Raceway in the NCWTS.

Roush Fenway has made 95 starts at Sonoma Raceway in the NSCS, earning two wins, two poles and 14 top-fives. The team has also brought home 33 top-10 finishes, while leading 274 laps.

The NSCS will take the green flag on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.
