Las Vegas, Nev. (Feb. 27, 2010) – After qualifying third for Saturday’s Sam’s Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Carl Edwards finished third behind Denny Hamlin and race winner Kevin Harvick. The event was delayed for two hours due to rain, but Edwards ran in the top-five most of the day leading a total of 28 laps. Earning 170 points Edwards was able to retain his series’ points lead while widening the gap to second place.
“Today was a great points day with Drew (Blickensderfer) and everyone doing a great job, Edwards said. We really wanted to get a win for Copart. If anyone out there is looking for a deal on a car, Copart.com is a great company. I’ve used them and I want to get them into victory lane. We’re at the top of the points standings…we wish we had a victory here but we will keep on working and it will be great.”
The first caution of the day occurred on lap six when Kelly Bires hit the wall coming out of turns one and two. By lap 13 Edwards radioed into the pits asking for a tear off. On lap 17 the caution flag flew and on lap 18 Edwards gave up third place to bring his Ford Fusion down pit road for fuel only and a tear off. On the restart Edwards was running in 29th position. Edwards was quickly able to dig his way back into the top-ten and by lap 62 Edwards took over the top spot from Brad Keselowski earning the No. 60 team five bonus points. On lap 66 Edwards came back down pit road for a green flag routine pit stop.
The field entered into their third caution on lap 83 as a result of a tangle between Michael McDowell and Danica Patrick. Edwards radioed to crew chief Drew Blickensderfer that “the balance is decent…the car is just little tight in the center.” On lap 86 Edwards stopped for four fresh tires and fuel. Edwards took the restart from the second position.
Just over the halfway point of the race, NASCAR issued a caution for rain at lap 104. The caution lasted only five laps. By lap 124 Edwards was able to take over the lead from Kyle Busch. On lap 147 the leaders came back onto pit road under caution. The No. 60 team put on four fresh tires and fuel. After pitting Edwards restarted in the third position with Denny Hamlin leading the field. By lap 175 Kevin Harvick raced past Denny Hamlin to take over the lead. With ten laps to go Harvick had almost a 2-second lead over second place Denny Hamlin. Unfortunately, as the laps ticked bye, time ran short for third place Edwards.
Edwards is three for three so far in 2010, earning top-five finishes in the first three events. The NASCAR Nationwide Series is off for two weeks and will race again at Bristol, TN on March 20th.
