Loudon, N.H. (June 28, 2009) – When Greg Biffle returned to the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the No. 16 CitiFinancial Ford Fusion for first time in nearly a month this weekend there was an unfamiliar face awaiting. For the second week in a row, crew chief Eddie Pardue missed the race weekend, electing to stay home with his hospitalized daughter. Former Roush Fenway Racing crew chief Chad Norris stepped in to help the No. 16 team, leading the CitiFinancial Ford Fusion to a sixth place finish in Saturday’s Camping World RV Sales 200.
Biffle fought a tight car all weekend. The team made gains during first practice and had more changes planned for the final session when heavy rain hit the track, cutting practice time by almost an hour. Qualifying ran as scheduled Saturday morning and Biffle posted the sixth fastest time, complaining that the car was “just tight.”
The CitiFinancial Ford Fusion struggled in the early laps of the race, dropping back to 11th on lap 14. Biffle told the team he was “super, super tight” and asked for a wedge adjustment on the first stop. When the first caution came out on lap 50, Biffle was still running 11th and still “extremely tight.” The CitiFinancial team gave him four fresh tires and a wedge adjustment and picked up one spot, sending Biffle back out in 10th.
Biffle moved forward after the restart, but quickly fell back to 13th, saying “the front end is chattering really bad.” After 47 green flag laps, the next caution came out on lap 105. Biffle asked for four tires, one round of wedge in and four rounds up on the track bar. The team picked up another position on the exchange and Biffle restarted 12th on lap 110.
On the next run, Biffle said he was “getting better” but the CitiFinancial Ford Fusion was having a hard time getting around lapped traffic. He was still 12th when the next caution fell and Biffle came in for the last stop of the day. Norris called for two tires to help with track position and Biffle asked the team to go another two rounds up on the track bar. The CitiFinancial Ford Fusion restarted sixth with 40 laps remaining. The race went caution-free to the end and Biffle crossed the stripe in seventh place.
“I have never driven anything that tight in my life,” said Biffle after the race. “We got behind with a bad set of tires during practice and we were chasing it all weekend. These guys did an unbelievable job working on the CitiFinancial Ford Fusion. How the car ended compared to where we were at the start of the day isn’t even close. Chad did a great job today – two tires at the end was definitely the way to go.”
