Las Vegas, Nev. (February 28, 2010) – Following practice on Friday, Greg Biffle felt confident the 3M Ford Fusion could be a contender for the win. He qualified seventh that afternoon and remained in the top 10 for the first 108 laps of the race leading once for four laps. However, during a pit stop on lap 109, Biffle came in fourth for two tires and got blocked in when he tried to exit the pits by AJ Allmendinger. Because it took so long to get out of his pit box, Biffle restarted 25th on lap 113. He drove all the way up to sixth but the handling never seemed as good as it was during those first 100 laps. Biffle was credited with a 10th-place finish and is now sixth in the point standings.
After starting on the inside of row four Biffle was able to make his way up to the third position before his first pit stop under yellow on lap 47. He had reported that the car was progressively getting looser so the crew gave him a wedge adjustment to try to tighten the car up for him. The Pit Bulls knocked out the stop in 12.8 seconds beating the 18 team out of the pits to restart second on lap 52.
On lap 53 Biffle took the lead and on lap 54 a caution came out for a malfunction with the caution lights. Biffle had the lead at the restart on lap 56 but Jeff Gordon was able to get by on lap 57. After dropping back to fourth, Biffle reported that the car felt like it was pivoting on the left front and he had lost grip. He was running fifth when Sam Hornish spun on lap 88 and brought out a caution. This time it was a track bar adjustment and a shim adjustment for the 3M Ford. Shim adjustments can take extra time but the Pit Bulls sent Biffle right back out in the fifth position for the restart on lap 92.
Biffle had picked up the fourth position just before the field slowed for the sixth caution of the day on lap 108. The call from the pit box was for two tires and fuel. The team took care of it in 5.9 seconds but Allmendinger, who was pitted right in front of Biffle came in just as the jack dropped in the 16 pit. While the two cars did not make contact, Biffle had to back up to get out of his pit and the delay cost him 20 positions on the track. He restarted 25th on lap 113 after coming back in for left-side tires.
Over the course of the next 100 laps and two green-flag pit stops Biffle was able to make his way back into the top 10. The 3M Ford was still just a little loose so Biffle took the opportunity to pit for final adjustments during a caution on lap 228. He restarted eighth on lap 233 and made his way up to sixth before the car got a little too tight. Biffle lost some ground but was able to hold off Jeff Burton in the closing laps for a 10th-place finish.
“The 3M Ford was a top-five car today,” said Biffle. “We had that deal in the pits with the 43 car and had to restart in the back about halfway through the race. We were able to get back up to the top 10 but the car just handled better up front. Overall it was a decent day and we were able to lead some laps but it definitely wasn’t the top-five finish we were looking for.”
The 10th-place finish drops Biffle and the 3M team to sixth in the point standings. They are 63 points behind point leader Kevin Harvick and have a 70-point advantage on 13th place. The team returns to the track next Sunday, March 7th at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
