Edwards Finishes 33rd in Daytona 500 after Getting Claimed in Multi-Car Accident

Daytona Beach, Fla. (Feb. 25, 2013) – Carl Edwards and the No. 99 Fastenal Ford finished today’s Daytona 500 in 33rd place after a multi-car wreck diminished the teams’ hopes for a win in the famed race. With 63 laps remaining, Trevor Bayne in the Wood Brothers No. 21 Ford Fusion spun out; claiming the 2, 17, 32, 33, 34, 35 and 38 in the aftermath. The accident was Edward’s fifth during this year’s Speedweeks in Daytona.

Edwards started the Daytona 500 in 36th position, but quickly managed to gain placement in the pack moving to 26th on the first lap. While the contenders were maneuvering the field, Edwards fell back to 35th by lap 12 where he remained until the first caution. When the yellow flag drew, Edwards came in for a two-tire change and the Fastenal Blue Team sent him back out in 29th.

The Daytona International Speedway saw its first wreck of the day, when Kasey Kahne in the No. 5 slipped on the outside wall, damaging the 2, 14, 29 and 24. During the caution, the No. 99 Ford made a pit stop for four tires and fuel and upon the restart Edwards drove to the 26th.

Nearing the halfway mark of the 500, Edwards showed promise when the Fastenal Ford advanced all the way to 13th behind fellow Roush Fenway driver Greg Biffle, shortly before getting caught up in the multi-car accident.

Edwards and the Blue Team headed back to the garage where they replaced the radiator, four tires, made repairs to the right front suspension and fixed front and rear body damage. The team worked quickly to get the Fastenal Ford back on track. Jimmy Johnson went on to take the checkered flag while Edwards was forced to settle for the 33rd-place finish.

“We work hard,” said crew chief Jimmy Fennig. “We will capitalize on this and we’ll be OK.”

Although the team endured a stream of luck perplexing to most, the No. 99 crew remains confident that the practice will pay off well as they leave memories of Daytona behind and look forward to another weekend to race for victory lane.

Edwards and the No. 99 Blue Team will return to the track on Sunday, March 3rd in Phoenix for the Subway Fresh Fit 500. Coverage of the race will air on FOX at 3 p.m. EST.
