Edwards Continues to Make Up Ground in Points Battle

Darlington, S.C. (May 7, 2010) – After qualifying fifth for Friday’s Nationwide Series race at Darlington Raceway, Carl Edwards finished sixth behind race winner Denny Hamlin. Edwards, running in the top 10 for the entire race was the highest finishing Roush Fenway Racing Ford of the night. He moved up one position in series’ points to fourth place.

“Overall the Copart Fusion was a great car that we fought hard with today, Edwards said. Drew (Blickensderfer) made all of the right calls and we were in a great position. On that last restart everybody almost wrecked and got all shuffled up. I couldn’t get back up to where we belonged. I just wish that we had one more shot at it, but those double file restarts are crazy at the end.

Running at Darlington, the track deemed “Too Tough to Tame” Edwards managed to keep the No. 60 Copart Ford clean and out of harms way the entire night.

Early in the race Edwards radioed to crew chief Drew Blickensderfer stating that the car was slightly free going into the corners and a little tight across the center of the turns. On lap 29 Edwards came down pit road and the No. 60 crew went to work adding fuel, four fresh tires, and adding one round on wedge into the rear of the car. Edwards entered the pits in the fourth position and on lap 31 he would restart sixth.

By lap 61 Edwards was stating that the car was loose all the way around the track. Roughly 20 laps later, the fifth caution of the night flew after Greg Biffle spun into the wall between turns three and four. Blickensderfer made the call for Edwards to come back down pit road for two tires and a wedge adjustment. Restarting from the sixth position, Edwards was able to run as high as second during this run.

With about 40 laps remaining Edwards gave the update that the No. 60 Ford was tight in turns one and two while being free in turns three and four. On lap 123 the leaders including Edwards came back down pit road for their last stop of the night. The Copart crew bolted on four fresh tires, made an air pressure adjustment and dropped the track bar 11/2 rounds.  Edwards would restart ninth. However, on lap 135 with only twelve laps remaining the ninth caution flag few. On the restart Edwards made a charge for the lead utilizing these four new tires. Unfortunately laps fell short and Denny Hamlin went on to take the win.
