Daytona Beach, Fla. (February 13, 2010) – The 2010 Nationwide opener at Daytona was nothing less than spectacular and all four of Roush Fenway’s entries showed that they were there to win. In 108 Nationwide wins, a win at the famed Daytona International Speedway has eluded the team and the team was looking to overcome that today.
Rain cancelled qualifying placing three of Roush Fenway’s four Ford’s in the top 10 for the start and early on Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 60 Fastenal Ford, looked to be strong but reported a tight race car. Rookie Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. also made a statement at the beginning of the race racing up front with Sprint Cup regulars and barely missing a single-car incident. Colin Braun made light contact with the wall early but would recover and move his way from the back of the pack to the front while Paul Menard gradually moved forward from his 43rd starting position.
The No. 61 hit the wall on lap 68 collecting both of Roush Fenway’s up-and-comers along with 12 other vehicles. Both the Con-way Freight and CitiFinancial Ford’s received severe damage but Braun would bring the Con-way Ford back on track to pick up a couple extra positions. The accident ended Stenhouse’s day early placing him in the 36th finishing spot.
“I was right in the middle of it,” said Braun. “I got in a bad spot.” Stenhouse also added, “I put us in a bad spot there when I overshot the pit earlier. But I had fun running out there just couldn’t get through the wreck.”
A melee occurred on lap 91 when Edwards made contact with Brad Keselowski ultimately sending Dale Earnhardt, Jr. flipping into the air and once again collecting multiple cars. The red flag waved over the 2.5-mile oval as everyone walked away from the accident un-scathed. The laps wound down and as the field came through turns three and four for the checkered flag, Edwards chased Tony Stewart for the lead while Menard sat fourth looking to gain positions. Cars were three-wide and spinning heading for the checkered with Edwards falling just a few car lengths shy of the win.
“It was like a high speed chess match out there racing for the win,” said Edwards following the race. Edwards claimed second while Menard finished sixth, Braun 34th and Stenhouse 36th. If the Nationwide race was a precursor to the Daytona 500, Sunday’s race is certain to be electrifying.
