Edwards Maintains Points Lead After Nashville
Nashville, Tenn. (April 3, 2010) – Carl Edwards was able to maintain his series points lead after taking the No. 60 Valvoline Ford to a sixth place finish in Saturday’s Nashville 300. Edwards ran in the top 10 most of the afternoon even after sustaining small damage from debris as a result of an accident on lap 115.
“Today was a little tough after some trouble on pit road…we battled back and finished sixth, Edwards said. We just didn’t have the right transmission, gearing or something. We just have figure it out and I’m positive we will. It was great to drive the Valvoline car and I look forward to Phoenix. It is one of my best tracks.”
After a morning rainstorm delayed qualifying for roughly forty-five minutes Edwards eventually qualified fourth for the day’s race. During the early laps Edwards communicated to the crew that the car was a little tight going into the corners. As a result of the earlier rain delay causing the track to be green, NASCAR called for a Mandatory caution at lap 30. Crew Chief Drew Blickensderfer called for a track bar adjustment along with four fresh tires and fuel. Taking the green flag for the restart on lap 36, Edwards was in the fourth position.
The excitement was turned up on lap 113 with a wreck in turns three and four. Included in the accident was fellow Roush Fenway Racing teammate, Colin Braun. Unfortunately the No. 60 collected some debris from this accident creating a slight hole in the nose of the No. 60 Valvoline Ford. On lap 119 Edwards came down pit road where the team repaired the damage to the nose of his Fusion.
Restarting in the 18th position, by lap 120 the field was back to green flag racing. By lap 131 Edwards was back running in the top-10.
Using a little pit strategy on the seventh caution of the day, Blickensderfer decided to bring the No. 60 down pit road for a two tire stop, allowing the team to hold onto valuable track position. By lap 186 Edwards was running in the top-five. With about 10 laps remaining Brad Keselowski was able to battle back from an 18th position restart and take over the fifth place from Edwards.
Kevin Harvick went on to win the race leading 52 laps during the 300 mile race. Edwards has a 16 point series’ points lead over second place Brad Keselowski.
