Sonoma, Cal. (June 23, 2013) – Edwards landed another top-five finish today, taking the No. 99 Aflac Ford to his second third-place finish at Sonoma Raceway and remaining second in the series points’ standings. Edwards is now a mere 25 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson going into next weekend’s Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway.
“I’m really proud of my Aflac guys,” said Edwards. “We ended up with a good position. I didn’t think our car was that good, so I’m happy with it.”
Edwards, who started his No. 99 Aflac Ford in third-place, was running in the top 10 at the start of the race, only indicating that the car was tight into the right of turn four. Edwards playing pit strategy stayed out under the first two cautions but brought his Ford in on lap 32 for four fresh tires and fuel.
Edwards went back out in 26th-place but quickly regained momentum. His Aflac Ford was feeling loose on exit in every turn on the 1.99 mile road course; the team made a wedge adjustment in the right rear, four tires and fuel on his second and final stop of the day.
After the adjustments improved handling conditions, Edwards charged back up into the top 10 with just 25 laps remaining. As the green-white-checkered enclosed, the Missouri native squeezed in his sixth top-five finish of the season.
Edwards and the No. 99 team return to the track on Saturday, June 29th for the Quaker State 400 at 7:00 p.m. EST on TNT.
