Las Vegas, NV. (Feb. 26, 2010) – Matt Kenseth and his No. 17 Crown Royal Ford Fusion posted a fast lap time of 28.916 seconds (186.748 mph) around Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Kenseth’s qualifying effort earned him the 11th starting position for Sunday’s Shelby American. Kurt Busch, captured the pole for Sunday’s race with a fast lap time of 28.614 seconds, while Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman rounded out the top three qualifiers.
Kenseth and his team spent the majority of Friday’s one practice session focusing on race trim since weather forecasters in the Las Vegas area were calling for rain showers Saturday. Since the team wasn’t sure what Mother Nature had up her sleeve for Saturday’s two practice sessions, the team wanted to make sure that the No. 17 Ford was handling like they needed it to be for Sunday. Kenseth reported that the Crown Royal Ford was a bit tight in Turn one during practice. After 23 laps in race trim, crew chief Todd Parrott chose to switch to qualifying trim in preparation for the afternoon’s qualifying session.
Kenseth drew the 25th qualifying position for Friday afternoon’s qualifying session. The Crown Royal Ford posted a fast lap time of 28.916 seconds and ended up eleventh at the end of qualifying.
“We worked and focused more on our qualifying effort this week,” stated Kenseth following his qualifying lap. “We still emphasized race trim a lot today, but we made sure that we got in some qualifying runs as well at the end of practice. We think it’s going to rain tomorrow so we just wanted to make sure we had some time to see how our car was in race trim in case we get rained out. The guys went to work and made some really good adjustments today and got the car a lot better for our qualifying lap.”
The No. 17 Crown Royal team is schedule to have two more practice sessions Saturday afternoon from 10:40 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. PST and then from 11:45 a.m. – 12:50 p.m. PST before Sunday’s race. The Shelby American will be televised on FOX Sunday, February 28th beginning at 3:00 p.m. EST.
