Kenseth Will Start 14th Sunday at Atlanta in the No.17 Valvoline Ford Fusion

Hampton, Ga. (March 5, 2010) – Matt Kenseth came to Atlanta Friday afternoon sporting the brand new colors of his No. 17 Valvoline Ford Fusion.  Atlanta Motor Speedway has a reputation of being one of the faster tracks on the Sprint Cup circuit, and Friday evening’s qualifying session lived up to that title.  Kenseth and his Valvoline Ford Fusion posted a fast lap time of 29.058 seconds (190.791 mph) around Atlanta Motor Speedway.  Kenseth’s qualifying run earned him the 14th starting position for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. captured the pole for Sunday’s race with a fast lap time of 28.761 seconds.  Kyle Busch and Juan Pablo Montoya rounded out the top three qualifiers Friday evening.

Kenseth drew the 20th qualifying position for Friday evening’s qualifying session under the setting sun and brisk temperatures.

“I was just a little too free out there during my qualifying laps,” said Kenseth following qualifying. “We tried a few different set-ups during practice today and I was pretty happy with the car.  We were near the top of the charts in today’s practice.  During our qualifying laps tonight I was just loose in the corners.  We have a few things that we’re going to work on during practice tomorrow and I’m confident that we’ll have a great car for Sunday’s race.”

Kenseth and his No. 17 Valvoline team are slated to have two more practice sessions Saturday afternoon from 11:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. EST and then from 12:20 p.m. – 1:20 p.m. EST before Sunday’s race.  The Kobalt Tools 500 will be televised on FOX Sunday, March 7th beginning at 1:00 p.m. EST.
