Nationwide: Edwards on Pace So Far in 2010 with a Solid Fourth Place Finish at Auto Club Speedway

FONTANA, Calif. (Feb. 20, 2010) – Carl Edwards and his No. 60 Copart team finished fourth in the Stater Bros. 300 at Auto Club Speedway Saturday. After starting fourth, the team struggled throughout the afternoon with some handling issues as well as dealing with the repercussions from two pit road penalties. Twice today, Edwards was penalized for speeding off of pit road as a result from what was believed to be a miss collaborated tachometer. In the end Edwards remained focused while Kyle Busch took the checkered flag. Coupled with his second place finish in Daytona last week Edwards is now leading in series standings 24 points ahead of Joey Logano.

“That was a crazy finish. You know at points in that race everything got strung out, but there at the end that’s what the NASCAR Nationwide Series is all about said Edwards, who fought back to a fourth place finish. “My Copart Ford Fusion was fast and I wanted a better run for them (Copart) today but it still ended up ok. We came back from two pit road penalties and it ended up being a good day.”

Early in the race Edwards was communicating that the car was tight. On lap 34 Edwards brought the No. 60 into the pits to make a track bar adjustment, air pressure adjustment and to get four fresh tires. Edwards came into the pit running in the eighth position and was able to make up three positions after pitting into fifth.

At lap 79, running eighth Edwards pits for four tires. Upon exiting pit road NASCAR penalized Edwards for speeding. Edwards had to make a pit road pass thru. Serving his penalty he rejoined the field in the eighteenth position. Shortly after, on lap 87 the yellow flag flew for debris on the front stretch. Edwards navigated his Copart Ford Fusion onto pit road where the team topped off with fuel. Once again, Edwards was penalized for speeding on pit road. His penalty was to start at the tail end of the longest line.

Back under green flag conditions, on lap 113, Edwards radioed to crew chief Mike Kelley saying that the balance in the car was “pretty darn good.” On lap 119 the caution flag dropped for the third time as a result of crash involving Roush Fenway Racing teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. At lap 120 Edwards came back into the pits where his No. 60 team took a half wedge out of the left rear. Shortly Edwards was back running in the top-10.

On lap 144 the yellow flag came out once again and the decision was made to bring the No. 60 down pit road for new right side tires. Edwards entered the pits running seventh and exited running ninth. Due to the caution the race ended with a green-white-checkered finish. On lap 152 Kyle Busch was able to get under Greg Biffle and claim the win. Edwards finished fourth, making two top-fives for 2010.
