Biffle Crosses Finish Line 24th in 3M Safety Ford at Indy

Speedway, Ind. (July 29, 2013) – Kissing the bricks at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway just wasn’t in the cards for Greg Biffle and his No. 16 3M Safety team.  Biffle qualified 27th and the team battled handling all weekend.  Long green flag runs didn’t allow many opportunities for adjustments and the caution never fell while Biffle was in position for the lucky dog.  Biffle finished 24th and the finish was enough for him to remain eighth in the Championship point standings.

As soon as the 3M Safety Ford hit the track, the team knew they had their hands full.  The team took full advantage of practice on Friday and Saturday trying to come up with the best race setup.  A tight handling condition in qualifying resulted in a 27th-place starting effort for Biffle at a place notoriously difficult to pass at.

The 160-lap race unfolded with long green flag runs, not leaving many opportunities to pit for adjustments.  The handling woes from practice continued into the race.  At first Biffle told his team he had no grip, then by the end, was tight.  Routine stops for four tires, fuel, wedge, shim and air pressure adjustments were all tried throughout the race.

Midway through the race Biffle called for no adjustments, but due to the opening struggle and long green flag runs fell a lap down to the leaders. This happened just as the field cycled through green flag stops and the handling started to come around on his Ford.  The 3M Pit Bulls made gains throughout the race and never gave up.  Biffle was in the “lucky dog” position to be back on the lead lap, but a caution never came.  Biffle ultimately crossed the finish line 24th, one lap down to the leaders.

Ryan Newman got to kiss the bricks at Indy, winning his first race of the season from the pole position.  After leading the most laps Jimmie Johnson had to settle for a second-place finish.  Kasey Kahne, Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth rounded out the top five.  Next weekend the Sprint Cup Series heads back to Pocono Raceway, the same track Biffle finished second at a few weeks ago.
