Biffle Leads Roush Fenway Charge in Daytona 500

Daytona Beach, Fla. (Feb. 24, 2013) – As was a common theme at Daytona Speedweeks, Greg Biffle lead the Roush Fenway effort in Sunday’s famed Daytona 500 at the Daytona International Speedway. In fact, for the third time during Speedweeks Biffle came to the white flag in second position, but was unable to maneuver around the race leader for the victory. Biffle settled for a sixth-place finish, in what was a strong Speedweeks for the No. 16 3M Ford team.  Teammate and rookie of the year candidate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished in 12th.

“Our car was a good drafting car and the only thing I could do is stay in line,” explained Biffle.  “I was going to make my move in the middle of three in four.  Off of four I was going back up to Danica (Patrick).  I knew (Dale Earnhardt) Jr. was backing up and then they said Jr. is coming on the bottom, but I knew he was by himself.  I’m thinking, ‘There’s no way he’s going to have enough momentum to get by us lined up on the top in the second groove.’

“Plus, he was coming so fast I don’t think I could have blocked him,” added Biffle. “We would have had a wreck like yesterday.  I would have never thought the bottom lane would have gotten a run like that at the end.  That’s what’s so frustrating.  I figured the 48 would side draft the 88 and then I’d have a chance to pass them both.  That’s what I was thinking was going to happen.  That was my plan.  I had it figured out, but my plan didn’t quite come together.”

Carl Edwards was involved in an early accident and forced to go to the garage; finishing 33rd; 41 laps down. Trevor Bayne, driving the Wood Brothers No. 21 Ford, was involved in the same accident, but returned to the track for a 27th-place finish; two laps down to the leader.

Roush Fenway and the Sprint Cup Series returns to action next week at Phoenix International Raceway, where RFR has won six times, most recently with Edwards in 2010.
