Indianapolis (July 29, 2013) – Travis Pastrana and the No. 60 Roush Fenway Racing team battled hard in a back-up car to earn a top-10 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. Pastrana picked up six positions in the final six laps to earn his fourth top-10 finish of the season.
“The guys never gave up on me and by the end of the race we were one of the fastest cars on the track,” said Pastrana. “Starting last and driving the back-up car to a top-10 isn't a win, but it was a solid ending to a rough start.”
Pastrana debuted a new look this weekend, carrying the X Games colors for the first of two consecutive races. The No. 60 team struggled during practice on Friday and lost the primary car after contact with the wall during qualifying on Saturday morning.
The No. 60 Roush Fenway crew worked feverishly for the next four hours to get the back-up X Games Ford Mustang ready to race. Due to the qualifying wreck, Pastrana had to start in the back of the pack.
After rolling off 39th in the No. 60 Ford Mustang, Pastrana began to work his way forward, settling into 21st position for the opening run of the day. The X Games Ford Mustang made its way down pit road for the first time under the green flag on Lap 31, opting for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment to try and help the tight handling car.
When Pastrana returned to the track, he radioed to the crew that the car was still too tight. He settled into the top-20 for the next run. The caution flag fell for the first time of the day on Lap 50 for debris. The No. 60 team visited pit road again for four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment for the tight race car.
Pastrana informed the crew that the chassis adjustment on that pit stop improved the handling of the car, by about half. He continued to run in the top-20, one lap down, until coming down pit road for the third time of the day for fuel only during a Lap 67 caution.
On Lap 74 Pastrana restarted 24th, battling to put himself in position for the free pass to get back on the lead lap. A timely caution on Lap 83 did just that, allowing Pastrana to visit pit road for the final time of the day. The team took four tires and made another chassis adjustment.
On the final restart of the day on Lap 94, Pastrana found himself 16th. In the closing six laps of the race, Pastrana picked up six positions, earning his fourth top-10 finish of the year, as he crossed the line in 10th.
